At God’s leading, he relocated to Connecticut where he met Jesus and was Born Again.  He joined Spottswood A.M.E. Zion Church where he received God’s call to the ministry to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Rev. Burley McHenry studied to prepare himself for this great task by attending and graduating from the New England District Conference School for Ministers.  He is an Elder in the A.M.E. Zion Church. Rev. McHenry has demonstrated strong interest in Prison Ministry and Discipleship and gives leadership in those areas at Spottswood.

Burley truly loves the Lord who saved him, who called him, who ordained him, and gave him a testimony to tell the world.

Reverend Gloria Balfour McHenry was born in Hartford, Connecticut and educated in the Hartford and Bloomfield school systems. She went on to college majoring in Legal Secretarial Science then Executive Secretarial Science to which she received her degree.

Although she felt the loving touch of God at the age of 4, it would be over twenty-five years later before she committed herself to Him.  During those years God continued to express His love and commitment to her and the importance of her committing her life to Him. Once she began to walk in her commitment to God, soon after she then felt a calling on her life and she willingly accepted that call. She left Connecticut to attend Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois where her faith and knowledge was deepened.  When she returned she attended Hartford Seminary Black Ministers Program. She graduated from the New England District Conference School for Ministers.

She is married to Rev. Burley McHenry since 1994 and they have been blessed to be raising their grandson Romell Brown. She loves the Lord and loves her Church. She has been a member of Spottswood A.M.E. Zion Church since 1991 and is an ordained Elder in the A.M.E. Zion Church.

During her walk with God she learned many nuggets from God that continue to sustain her to this day.  Some of them are: (1) God’s mercy is never in short supply; (2) God’s love never ceases; (3) God’s lessons are meant to help us to grow spiritually; and (4) What lessons we don’t learn the first time, will continue to come back until we learn them.

Her three favorite scriptures are: Ephesians 3:17-19, Lamentation 3:22 – 23 and Deuteronomy 6:5

Reverend Omena McCoy, Associate Minister

Reverend Omena McCoy is the daughter of Vanessa Smith, and granddaughter of Mae Frances Smith. After receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree in English (2012) and Masters of Science degree in Sociology (2014) from Southern Connecticut State University, Rev. O  immersed herself in both state and municipal government serving as a policy analyst. A May 2022 graduate of Yale University School of Divinity, Rev. O received her Master of Divinity degree with a concentration in Black Church Studies. She is the recipient of the Andover Newton Seminary’s Martin B. Copenhaver Preaching Prize for exceptional achievement in, and promise for, outstanding preaching and the Yale University School of Divinity’s Oliver Ellsworth Daggett Scholarship Prize for ability, Christian character and promise of usefulness as a preacher. Serving as an ordained deacon in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Rev. O is passionate about using liberative frameworks for biblical interpretation that uplift marginalized communities, addresses the harm caused by the weaponization and misinterpretation of the gospel, and fosters a curiosity about–and love–for Christ.  Since graduating from Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s chaplain residency program in 2023, Rev. O has been working toward obtaining board certification for professional chaplaincy. As a spiritual care practitioner, she believes that when communities exercise the courage to look upon suffering and not turn away, they allow themselves to fully and lovingly acknowledge the humanity of others, and come to know Christ more intimately.
